Body Acne on Back and Shoulders: Everyday Habits That Make It Worse

Body acne – especially on the back, chest and shoulders – can be just as frustrating as facial breakouts. It’s easy to blame hormones and move on, but everyday habits often make it worse without us realising.

Tight, non-breathable clothing traps sweat and oil against the skin. Gym wear worn for hours after a workout, heavy backpacks rubbing the same area, or synthetic fabrics in hot weather can all irritate follicles and contribute to “bacne”.

Hair products are another culprit. Thick conditioners, oils and sprays can run down your back in the shower and leave residue that clogs pores. If your back is breaking out, try rinsing hair first, then washing your body afterwards so you remove leftover product.

Not showering soon after heavy sweating – from gym, sports or hot weather – gives bacteria and sweat more time to sit on the skin. A quick rinse or gentle body wash, followed by thoroughly drying the area, can help.

Using a mild, acne-friendly body wash with salicylic acid or similar ingredients a few times a week may be useful for some people. But avoid harsh scrubs or constant picking – they can inflame the skin, darken marks and prolong healing. If body acne is severe, painful or spreading, a dermatologist can suggest a proper plan suited to your skin type and lifestyle.
